this hello kitty car is supposedly the most popular car in asia.  i don't doubt it.  hahaa.  it's like the size of a mini but with like hello kitty decor all over it and so i HAD to take a picture of it.

the bed i wish i had.  *sigh*  so pretttty and soooooooooooft and comffffffffy.  not to diss on my bed or anything, cause god knows i love it soooooo but dang...a queen sized bed would be nice too. hahaa

remember the free chocolate covered strawberry that i got?  well, this was the wonderful man who gave it to me! haha

just look at the strawberry desserts!!! sooooo goooooood!

    endless...

and after looking at all that, i had to have my own.  c'mon...such great desserts for <$1?  who can resist?

    me and the mimi's. heh.

me and my golden ticket. ahhaha.  go go fity in the house!

outside the CKS Memorial Hall MRT Station.  Since its year of the dog, there are lots of dog posters everywhere.  you would've loved it sarah!

all of us that went to see the lantern displays at CKS Memorial Hall.  top row:  amelia, me, manly.  bottomrow:  jessie, mimi, wendy, and karen

can you find which dog i'm trying to imitate?  well...sorta...haha

at the front of CKS Memorial.  it was quite an eye pleasing site.  lots of really cool lanterns

another shot of the place but with the cool building thing in the background

us, trying to be zoo animals.  keep in mind, these are for lil toddlers to put their heads in...so it was really, REALLY low to the ground. ahhaa.  this is wendy, jessie, and amelia.

this is manly, mimi, and me.  that's a lil toddler next to us...just for reference to show exactly how small it really was.  yes, parents were laughing at us.

that one big hotel that looks hella cool made into a lantern. heh.  these are all hand made!

me and manly next to some red lanterns

hahaha...by a giant bone which resembled more a fallic symbol then it does a bone. heh.

and of course, this bone just happened to be called the "auspicious ding". HAHAHA.  i dunno but we thought that was HILARIOUS.

this picture is for you sarah...we tried to find a maltese but couldn't.  couldn't find a shitszu either.  hahaha this would just have to do

  • February 10, 2006- I'll spare you all the nitty gritty details.

Highlights/Interesting Things/Not So Interesting But Made Me Happy Things:

    1.      Helped an older lady who was riding the MRT for the first time find her way to Gu Ting.  She was way far from where she needed to be and I used no Chinglish at all.  On top of that, she didn’t even know I was from America.  Way awesome, huh?  We chatted while getting to our respective stops and she asked if I was going out on a date.  Um…no. Hahaha.  Apparently I was wearing a lot of makeup or something for the day time??  And then she continues to ask if I was married yet.  Errr….wow.  I must look really old.  First I’m asked if I am 30 and now I’m asked if I’m married.  There isn’t a ring on my ring finger…

    2.      Went shopping and was desperately trying to find some cute stylish fob clothes.  No success.  Everything was just too fobby.  But I did however, find an awesome steal for HELLA CUTE SHOES.  3 pairs for $3000NT…which is less than $30 a pair.  Very cute!  I shall try to post pictures up later but Xanga is GAY (yah, you hear that Patrick?!  Gay!!!) and I’ve gone over my max uploads for a while.  Bleh.

    3.      Got dinner with Mimi and hung out at Berry Milk (hella good strawberry dessert store) later on by her place.  We were just chilling and enjoying people watching when we came up with the brilliant idea to run to the nearby 7-11 and grab some beer.  Heh.  (1)Because we can and (2) well, because we can! Hahaha.  We were like damn, Taiwan is awesome.  You can walk around with open alcohol in the streets.  So that’s exactly what we did.  Sat there and enjoyed some.  Because we can.  =P

    February 11, 2006

Met up with Mimi again and her friend Karen who came to visit while studying abroad in Korea.  We also met up with Mimi’s friends in Taiwan, Wendy, Amelia, and Jessie and went shopping at 5 fen pu.  I found another pair of really cute shoes and these were only $740NT!!! That’s like…gee, $23.  How great is that!!!?? They were 50% so I was totally thrilled.

Went to Xi Men Ding afterwards and got the Tie Ban Sha Wei Ma (really good steak sandwich) that I’ve been longing for.  It was splendid.  Just as I remembered!  Then visited Jessie at her work and chilled on couches at MUJI (home furniture store sorta…) for a good 40 minutes I must say.  Mimi, Karen, and I were all so tired from a whole day of walking that we just sat there and talked. Hahaha.  It was awesome because it was as if we were at a café but we weren’t really…we were in middle of the furniture store. We were smart enough to not have sat down on the bean bag chairs because all the people who sat down had a hard ass time getting up.  We watched and snickered like immature lil school children.  Aiya.  Ok, maybe not snickered, but definitely giggled.  Heh.  Good times, good times.

Went to a club, Cheers Nini, later on that night.  It was a party thrown by liquid-lifestyles and of course, that Royal kid was there again.  I saw him and I was like, I remember that dude…funny name…oh yah-Royal.  But anyway, so it was a traffic light party- so wear green if you are single, yellow if unsure, red if taken, and if you participated in this, you get a chance to be entered in a raffle drawing for 50 cent/linkin park front runner dude concert in Taipei.  I didn’t get a raffle ticket at first because I guess the lady didn’t really see my…errr…colored tank top. Heh.  And I figured there was no point in getting a ticket because I never win anything anyway.  At least not raffle type stuff.  Anyway, I end up getting a ticket because Wendy had to put her other half into the bucket and so I just asked for one conveniently.  Anyway, long story short…I won the raffle and I’m going to see 50 cent/linkin park front runner dude in concert in Taipei!  Each ticket is priced at $150 (got 2) and I got like the best seats you can get after the VIP section which is probably for local radio stations or something.  I want to sell the other one, cause I mean, can you imagine how many more shoes I can get with that???  But yah, gonna take Manly with me, since Mimi and her friends all bought their tickets a long time ago.

Headed back to Mimi’s shack at like 4 am in the morning and got some breakfast.  Right below where she lives is this breakfast store that sells the best dan bing with cheese (egg…thing…) and xiang gi bao jia dan (chicken/egg hamburger).  So that’s what I got and boy was I way happy.  Such great food.  *sigh*. Hehehe.  We then proceeded to squish 4 people total in Mimi’s room.  Think of my old room back at Durant but SMALLER.  Yah, pretty insane.  It was all good though. Heh.

    February 12, 2006

Not much happened today.  Got woken up by Borkae way early.  My cell just wouldn’t stop ringing and he was the cause of it.  Bleh. Hahaha.  Jkjk.  But yah, had lunch with the girls and then headed back home.  Came back, showered, got ready and met up with Bk.  We walked around Gong Guan and I got my Nai Lu (green milk tea) that I’ve been wanting since me, Helen, Dave, and Trace went there back in December 2004.  I also got a Mango Bing Sha (err…icy? Smoothie sorta?) and the lady thought we ordered too many drinks because there was an excessive amount of beverages on the bill (BK ordered a drink too) but no, I just wanted both.  Heh.  We talked and caught up and walked around.  That was fun.  We walked from Gong Guan all the way to Gu Ting, which I guess wasn’t that far, but it was a fair amount of walking.  Again, good times, good times.

Today was Yuan Xiao Jie (lantern festival) and while walking out of the Xiao Bi Tan MRT Station, I was just casually looking up into the sky and I see all these red glowing balls in the sky and was like wth???  Those, of course, were like…lanterns of some sort that float in the night sky and there were fireworks going off too in the near distance.  It was such an awesome sight to see and I enjoyed it very much.  It was just so cute…all these red glowing balls in the sky coming from every direction.  On top of that, can’t remember the last time I’ve seen fireworks either.  Didn’t see any this past or last year’s New Year.  Didn’t see any this 4th of July b/c I was in India nor did I see it in 2004 because we went to some party at Stanford.  It was just nice seeing them again.  I’ve always had a thing for fireworks.  I don’t think its anything I will ever grow out of.  Heh.  Must have fireworks at my wedding.  =P  And yes, I know, it’s going to be an expensive wedding with fireworks.   That just means no open bar then.  Hahaha.

February 9, 2006

  • Because my dumbass was in a rush today (what’s new), I totally forgot my journal and so therefore I must resort to using my laptop for the duration of my trip.  Can ramble on about all the errands I ran this morning before getting to the airport or the lack of sleep I got last night, or rather, this morning (went to bed at 5am and woke up at 11am), but I’ll spare the details and go on about the more important things, like how I’m currently feeling.

So, am at Gate 100 and just people watching.  It amazes me that for well over a year now, the only thing that I wanted badly enough was to go back to Taiwan and finally, I am here, at the gate, patiently awaiting the stewardess call out the economy class folks.  It even makes me think back to the summer while en route to India, we flew over Taiwan and I wanted so desperately to stop there, even if it was for a 9 hour layover (remember, I spent mine in Singapore).  Some other interns coming from other parts of the US actually did have their layovers in Taiwan.  Lucky bastards.  But anyway, yup, no deluxe economy this time, only regular economy.  Oh well, what can you do.  I was too cheap to spend the extra $200 or so to have upgraded seats.  I mean really, that $200 can buy me a whole bunch of stuff when I get in Taiwan and OooOO will I treat myself to something good since I essentially saved that. Heh.  Or not.  But that’s how I’m going to justify it.  ;P  Blah.  I know I’m going to kick myself in the ass 9 hours from now when I’m dying on the plane.  Bleh.

Another thought that runs across my mind is how easy it is for me to pinpoint out all the fobs.  I honestly don’t know what it is.  Is it the fobby hair?  The lack of makeup?  The bushy eyebrows?  The mix-matched colored clothing?  The moth ball smell?  Glasses?  Hmm.  I believe it’s all of the above.  I think I stick out like a sore thumb.  Deborah, get ready to become fobalized again.  Horray!  I can’t wait.  Perhaps blue streaks in my hair will help with that.  Heh.

February 8, 2006 - This day essentially ceased to exist because I was on the plane the entire time and because of the time difference, by the time I got to Taiwan, it was already the next day.  How sad.  Some interesting things that occurred on the plane:

    1.  A husband and wife sat next to me in a 3 seat row.  I had the aisle seat.  Chatted a little bit in the beginning.  First thing out of the husband's mouth:  "So, how long have you been in the States for now?  30 something years?  Are you teaching there?"  My thoughts on this:  " ."  I was speechless.  30 something years???? Are you effing kidding me???  I look effing 30 something to you?!!!  My god!  I was wearing NO MAKEUP, hair pulled back, and in sweats.  I look like I'm 12!  Argh!  Ok. Fine, maybe not 12 but sure as hell not 30 something.  oiyeee.  No good already.

    2.  The husband and wife grab everything that the flight attendants bring by.  Wine.  Water.  Ramen.  Peanuts.  Anything and everything they take.  Sure enough, the wife gets plane sickness due to the bad mixture of the wine and her high blood pressure or something and starts yacking.  JUST MY EFFING LUCK.  Looking back at my entry earlier that day, yah, maybe I should have got upgraded seats.  *sigh*.  Hopefully the plane ride back won't be so bad.

    February 9, 2006

Hmm...today's won't be so interesting for people who've never been to Taiwan so stop reading now, unless you really have nothing to do at work and want to hear about my day.   I'm just updating for everyone who said to keep them updated. haha

Great day.  Leave it up to jetlag and time zone differences for me to finally get to a normal sleep schedule.  No more going to bed at 6am and waking up at 4pm.  I woke up happily and well rested at a nice hour of 9:30am and was surprised to be blessed with free wi-fi in my uncle’s neighborhood.  Yay.  I get ready, still unable to decide where I wanted to go first…or rather, what I wanted to eat first.  Got ready, went out, was still a little hesitant to order food still, since I’ve been away for so long and didn’t want to seem so foreign.  Then, decided, dude, I have to go back and see Tai Da (NTU-National Taiwan University) first.  It’s like…home.  I’m so familiar with it and I totally crave the shou rou gua bao (skinny meat bun) there.  So I hop onto the MRT and was about to put money on my MRT card when it said that I still had a balance of $300 NT.  Yay!  That should be able to last me a few days.  Got off at GongGuan station and was smiling the entire time.  Rather, I was smiling the whole time I was on the MRT because I missed that so much too. Hahaa.  Anyway, got to the front gates of Tai Da.  Got my gua bao and headed for campus.  It felt like second nature.  Incredible.  Walked around the basketball area.  They put in new tennis courts.  Walked inside the ICLP just for kicks and they’ve done some redecorating to that place too.  Walked inside Guo Qing (the dorm i stayed at while studying abroad) and they’ve also given those foreign exchange kids shoe racks now.  Bastards.  WE never got SHOE RACKS!!!  Saw the laundry machines, the showers, and the bathroom.  Was so comfortable I could have gone in and taken a sh*t right then and there. Haha.  Sorry for painting such a wonderful picture but it’s true!  It was great to be back again!

Walked down "the alley".  Much has changed to lots of the food stores there too.  Many stores that were there before were gone now and some of the smallers stores got larger and some of the larger stores got smaller.  Odd.  I got Da Chang (uhh..i’ll spare you the description of this one) at that Gan Mian (dry noodle) place and it was HELLA GOOD.  That was one of the stores that got bigger.  About time.  More eating space!  The lady who Marilyn always went to go get tang qing cai (hot green veggies) from was still there too.  I didn’t say hi this time but I’ll be sure to go back with Manly to say hi.  It was lunchtime and she seemed busy.  Headed to Bele’m to grab me some garlic bread.  Yum.  Been craving it for a while and got 2 loafs!  Heh.

Went to the Ke Ji Da Lou (Technology Building) MRT station and merted to Taipei Main Station cause that’s where I was to meet Mimi since she lives around there.  Saw hella signs of Valentine’s Day celebrations and just red decorations and shit all over and made me all blaaaaah because dude, apparently Valentine’s Day is a big thing here.  Annoying.  Met up with Mimi, but before that happened, got hunted down by these girls doing this damn health survey thing and I just filled it out for the hell of it.  I was talking to them and I don’t know why I was so shy.  Bleh.  MUST get acquainted with Taiwan again.  MUST.  Met up with Mimi, got food, chilled at her place-not too bad.  Though it is small, it’s quite quaint and it’s really not as bad as she described it.  I rather like it.  We went to a super-sized ChenPing Bookstore near Warner Village.   It was rather rad.  Then went walking through Xin Guang San Yue Mall.  Of course, could afford NOTHING there, but it was just great to be in a mall in Taiwan again and looking at all the fobby clothes and shoes.  Missed having Phoebe or Alice by my side. Heh.

Met up with Mr. To Lee and also saw his girl, Linda.  Very pretty, very nice.  Apparently he moved back home and quit the China Post.  Now he’s working at this news station as a story go-getter.  He seems to really like his job.  Chatted it up at a Barista Coffee, then me and Mimi headed to the center where she teaches English in bu xi bans (group learning classes).  I got to be her TA for the day and it was cool learning some English grammer. Haha.  Do YOU know what a past perfect participle is?  Yup, sat there for 1.4 hours while she taught/asked/engaged in English speaking activities.  It was pretty cool.  Dunno if I’d do it again though.  If you are reading this Mim’s, sorry…dunno how much more I can take of that guy talking about camping and walking everywhere as a mode of transportation.

Later on, went to a night market near by and got lots of food.  Met up with one of her Taiwanese friends that she met on loveboat.  Forgot the girl’s name, but she seemed really down to earth and cool.  We are all going to go party it up together.  Horray for you fan (oil rice) and xian nai fen yuan (fresh milk tapioca drink).  Mimi got this papaya salad that was really good but also very spicy.  The level of spicyness was even kicking my ass.  But nevertheless, I was in heaven.

And I am still in heaven and still smiling at the end of the day.  Can’t wait for what’s in store for tomorrow as well as Saturday.  I smell an all-you-can-drink ladies night (that means NO COVER!!!) clubbing adventure coming up.  OOH.  That, and free gelato ice cream cause Mimi has a friend who is opening up a gelato ice cream store.  Interesting.  If that falls through, Capatina (hella good Italian ice cream), get ready cause here I come.
