Because my dumbass was in a rush today (what’s new), I totally forgot my journal and so therefore I must resort to using my laptop for the duration of my trip. Can ramble on about all the errands I ran this morning before getting to the airport or the lack of sleep I got last night, or rather, this morning (went to bed at 5am and woke up at 11am), but I’ll spare the details and go on about the more important things, like how I’m currently feeling.
So, am at Gate 100 and just people watching. It amazes me that for well over a year now, the only thing that I wanted badly enough was to go back to Taiwan and finally, I am here, at the gate, patiently awaiting the stewardess call out the economy class folks. It even makes me think back to the summer while en route to India, we flew over Taiwan and I wanted so desperately to stop there, even if it was for a 9 hour layover (remember, I spent mine in Singapore). Some other interns coming from other parts of the US actually did have their layovers in Taiwan. Lucky bastards. But anyway, yup, no deluxe economy this time, only regular economy. Oh well, what can you do. I was too cheap to spend the extra $200 or so to have upgraded seats. I mean really, that $200 can buy me a whole bunch of stuff when I get in Taiwan and OooOO will I treat myself to something good since I essentially saved that. Heh. Or not. But that’s how I’m going to justify it. ;P Blah. I know I’m going to kick myself in the ass 9 hours from now when I’m dying on the plane. Bleh.
Another thought that runs across my mind is how easy it is for me to pinpoint out all the fobs. I honestly don’t know what it is. Is it the fobby hair? The lack of makeup? The bushy eyebrows? The mix-matched colored clothing? The moth ball smell? Glasses? Hmm. I believe it’s all of the above. I think I stick out like a sore thumb. Deborah, get ready to become fobalized again. Horray! I can’t wait. Perhaps blue streaks in my hair will help with that. Heh.
February 8, 2006 - This day essentially ceased to exist because I was on the plane the entire time and because of the time difference, by the time I got to Taiwan, it was already the next day. How sad. Some interesting things that occurred on the plane:
1. A husband and wife sat next to me in a 3 seat row. I had the aisle seat. Chatted a little bit in the beginning. First thing out of the husband's mouth: "So, how long have you been in the States for now? 30 something years? Are you teaching there?" My thoughts on this: "
." I was speechless. 30 something years???? Are you effing kidding me??? I look effing 30 something to you?!!! My god! I was wearing NO MAKEUP, hair pulled back, and in sweats. I look like I'm 12! Argh! Ok. Fine, maybe not 12 but sure as hell not 30 something. oiyeee. No good already.
2. The husband and wife grab everything that the flight attendants bring by. Wine. Water. Ramen. Peanuts. Anything and everything they take. Sure enough, the wife gets plane sickness due to the bad mixture of the wine and her high blood pressure or something and starts yacking. JUST MY EFFING LUCK. Looking back at my entry earlier that day, yah, maybe I should have got upgraded seats. *sigh*. Hopefully the plane ride back won't be so bad.
February 9, 2006
Hmm...today's won't be so interesting for people who've never been to Taiwan so stop reading now, unless you really have nothing to do at work and want to hear about my day. I'm just updating for everyone who said to keep them updated. haha
Great day. Leave it up to jetlag and time zone differences for me to finally get to a normal sleep schedule. No more going to bed at 6am and waking up at 4pm. I woke up happily and well rested at a nice hour of 9:30am and was surprised to be blessed with free wi-fi in my uncle’s neighborhood. Yay. I get ready, still unable to decide where I wanted to go first…or rather, what I wanted to eat first. Got ready, went out, was still a little hesitant to order food still, since I’ve been away for so long and didn’t want to seem so foreign. Then, decided, dude, I have to go back and see Tai Da (NTU-National Taiwan University) first. It’s like…home. I’m so familiar with it and I totally crave the shou rou gua bao (skinny meat bun) there. So I hop onto the MRT and was about to put money on my MRT card when it said that I still had a balance of $300 NT. Yay! That should be able to last me a few days. Got off at GongGuan station and was smiling the entire time. Rather, I was smiling the whole time I was on the MRT because I missed that so much too. Hahaa. Anyway, got to the front gates of Tai Da. Got my gua bao and headed for campus. It felt like second nature. Incredible. Walked around the basketball area. They put in new tennis courts. Walked inside the ICLP just for kicks and they’ve done some redecorating to that place too. Walked inside Guo Qing (the dorm i stayed at while studying abroad) and they’ve also given those foreign exchange kids shoe racks now. Bastards. WE never got SHOE RACKS!!! Saw the laundry machines, the showers, and the bathroom. Was so comfortable I could have gone in and taken a sh*t right then and there. Haha. Sorry for painting such a wonderful picture but it’s true! It was great to be back again!
Walked down "the alley". Much has changed to lots of the food stores there too. Many stores that were there before were gone now and some of the smallers stores got larger and some of the larger stores got smaller. Odd. I got Da Chang (uhh..i’ll spare you the description of this one) at that Gan Mian (dry noodle) place and it was HELLA GOOD. That was one of the stores that got bigger. About time. More eating space! The lady who Marilyn always went to go get tang qing cai (hot green veggies) from was still there too. I didn’t say hi this time but I’ll be sure to go back with Manly to say hi. It was lunchtime and she seemed busy. Headed to Bele’m to grab me some garlic bread. Yum. Been craving it for a while and got 2 loafs! Heh.
Went to the Ke Ji Da Lou (Technology Building) MRT station and merted to Taipei Main Station cause that’s where I was to meet Mimi since she lives around there. Saw hella signs of Valentine’s Day celebrations and just red decorations and shit all over and made me all blaaaaah because dude, apparently Valentine’s Day is a big thing here. Annoying. Met up with Mimi, but before that happened, got hunted down by these girls doing this damn health survey thing and I just filled it out for the hell of it. I was talking to them and I don’t know why I was so shy. Bleh. MUST get acquainted with Taiwan again. MUST. Met up with Mimi, got food, chilled at her place-not too bad. Though it is small, it’s quite quaint and it’s really not as bad as she described it. I rather like it. We went to a super-sized ChenPing Bookstore near Warner Village. It was rather rad. Then went walking through Xin Guang San Yue Mall. Of course, could afford NOTHING there, but it was just great to be in a mall in Taiwan again and looking at all the fobby clothes and shoes. Missed having Phoebe or Alice by my side. Heh.
Met up with Mr. To Lee and also saw his girl, Linda. Very pretty, very nice. Apparently he moved back home and quit the China Post. Now he’s working at this news station as a story go-getter. He seems to really like his job. Chatted it up at a Barista Coffee, then me and Mimi headed to the center where she teaches English in bu xi bans (group learning classes). I got to be her TA for the day and it was cool learning some English grammer. Haha. Do YOU know what a past perfect participle is? Yup, sat there for 1.4 hours while she taught/asked/engaged in English speaking activities. It was pretty cool. Dunno if I’d do it again though. If you are reading this Mim’s, sorry…dunno how much more I can take of that guy talking about camping and walking everywhere as a mode of transportation.
Later on, went to a night market near by and got lots of food. Met up with one of her Taiwanese friends that she met on loveboat. Forgot the girl’s name, but she seemed really down to earth and cool. We are all going to go party it up together. Horray for you fan (oil rice) and xian nai fen yuan (fresh milk tapioca drink). Mimi got this papaya salad that was really good but also very spicy. The level of spicyness was even kicking my ass. But nevertheless, I was in heaven.
And I am still in heaven and still smiling at the end of the day. Can’t wait for what’s in store for tomorrow as well as Saturday. I smell an all-you-can-drink ladies night (that means NO COVER!!!) clubbing adventure coming up. OOH. That, and free gelato ice cream cause Mimi has a friend who is opening up a gelato ice cream store. Interesting. If that falls through, Capatina (hella good Italian ice cream), get ready cause here I come.
